Cautionary Tale

 Behind the Music

This is one of my favorite songs on the CD, but it is the least liked by my friends and family.  The music is nearly twenty years old, and the lyrics are simple, but I hope they help someone who hears them to recognize their pursuit of worldly gain may be overshadowing the happiness that waits right in front of them.

Lyrics

He’s got a vision for his future, and this ain’t it.

Knows how his life could be;

Just saw it on TV.

All it requires is a minor priority shift.

He understands that God has a plan,

But maybe he can help it along.

For a while he’s distracted from his loneliness,

Chasing cash, wine, women and song.

He barely noticed the new neighbor moving in next door.

Christian, pretty, and kind,

Also biding her time,

She trusts in God to bless her life with something more.

You reap only what you sow.

Through Him do all blessings flow.

Trust in Him to prevail,

Or be a cautionary tale.

He is burning his candle at both ends.

Got to pay for the image that his vision demands.

She’s on her knees asking God to deliver a friend.

Then one day he sees her there,

And she catches his stare.

It’s in this moment they could be eternally,

But there’s somewhere he has to be.

Only on God should you lean.

Deny desire as your king.

Trust in Him to prevail,

Or be a cautionary tale.
