Break Left

 Behind the Music

I remember running across the street from my house on warm Saturday mornings to my friend’s yard hoping to get picked for his big brother’s pick-up football game.  It was rare, but when they had room (or mercy) I would get a chance to play outside, back-up emergency, last-ditch, no-other-reasonable-choice receiver.  My imagination would run wild with unrealized moments of glory.  Who doesn’t love to see the underdog come out on top?  It’s probably because we’ve all felt like the little guy at some point or another.  God has dedicated His strength to the unlikely hero throughout the Bible, and they give us all hope.

Lyrics

Vacant lot, Saturday morning. Neighborhood football score is tied.

The last-picked man says he’s got a plan.

Doubt moves through the huddle, but there’s nothing left to try.

There’s a wall of a kid that they can’t get by.

The quarterback moves behind the center,

His palms are sweating and his throat is tight.

The ball is snapped, and he rolls back.

He turns to see his receivers all covered on the right,

But there’s no target in sight.

Just then, the architect of this desperate plan,

A ‘David’ among ‘Goliaths’ whose time is now at hand,

Moves the opposite direction to the other side of the lot.

Ignored and alone, he’s the quarterback’s one and only shot.

The big defender turns to see the winning pass hit the spot!

After the celebrations, the quarterback asks, “Where’d you get that play?”

The little hero says, “Last Sunday,

My pastor preaching on avoiding danger said,

“If the world is moving to the right, break left!”
